The Wairarapa is the closest wine region to Wellington. It encompasses the fabled wine town of Martinborough. Wonderfully informative this map shows all the current winery cellar doors/tasting rooms that you can visit in the region. It would make a great addition to any home or office where people love their wines.
The Wairarapa, which means “Glistening Waters” in Maori, is located at the lower right-hand corner of New Zealand's North Island, approximately an hour north-east of Wellington. The winemaking area is divided into three main sub-regions: Masterton to the north, Gladstone in the middle and Martinborough to the south. The distance from Masterton to Martinborough it is about 35km.
As well as producing premium Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc wines, other top varieties include Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon are also grown here. The long hot summers, dry autumn and gravelly soil from an ancient riverbed all add up to perfect conditions for growing cool climate grapes.
There are now more than 50 vineyards, all within a short drive of Wairarapa’s main towns. The Wine Underground map gives you an indication of where those cellar doors/tasting rooms are.
It’s fun, great looking and wonderfully informative.
