Northland is New Zealand’s most northerly wine region, with pockets of winegrowing situated mainly on the east coast, particularly around the Bay of Islands and the Karikari Pensinula, with another cluster on the west coast near Kaitaia.
Wine history lovers can't miss Kemp House and the Stone Store, two of New Zealand’s oldest buildings. It’s also the site where the first grapes were planted in New Zealand over 200 years ago. The first vines were planted in the Bay of Islands in 1819, a full 30 years before missionaries began planting in the Hawkes Bay. The founding father of viticulture in the Antipodes, James Busby, had a vineyard at his house at Waitangi before going on to establish the Hunter Valley wine region in Australia.
Northland’s long, narrow shape means there is nowhere further than 50 kilometres from the ocean, and its northerly latitude delivers as close to a subtropical climate as is found in New Zealand.
The region's wines are mostly produced from Chardonnay, Syrah, and red blends, with Pinotage, Chambourcin, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc are amongst other varieties cultivated here.
