Canterbury is a large province on the central east coast of the South Island of New Zealand, with Christchurch, New Zealand's third-largest center, sits on the Canterbury coast next to Banks Peninsula

The Canterbury wine region is surrounded by the magnificent Alps to the west and the sweeping Pacific Ocean to the east. While there have been vineyards planted in the region since the mid-1800s, commercial viticulture began in Canterbury only in the 1970s. The cool, dry climate with good sunshine and long growing seasons promote styles of wines which are renowned for their intense flavours, richness and complex fruit. Canterbury's latitude of 43°S puts it at a similar distance from the Equator as Tuscany in the northern hemisphere, although the influence of the Pacific Ocean makes for a very different terroir.

The Canterbury wine region is New Zealand’s fourth largest with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties making up nearly 60% of the region’s vineyards, Riesling comes in third as the most popular grown variety with Sauvignon Blanc in fourth place.

Canterbury was granted GI (Geographical Indication) status in 2016, while the process for the North Canterbury zone was not finalized as of mid 2019. Almost all of Canterbury's wineries can be reached with a short drive from Christchurch. Vines are planted from Waimate in the south, to Cheviot in the north, and include the micro-climates of Banks Peninsula and Waipara Valley.
